Touch-sensitive keypad, Haptic feedbac, ModeShift

Easily the most notable feature on this handset is the innovative “ModeShift” touch-sensitive keypad which supports something called Haptic feedbac, because it doesn’t really have any conventional buttons. When powered off, the surface of ROKR E8 is smooth, with no visible keys. Power on the device and it presents a virtual numbered keypad on the front surface, while using camera it displays the camera controls and when used in the multimedia mode it displays the music keys.. With one “press” of the virtual music key, the phone keypad disappears and control keys for the music player – play, pause, fast forward and rewind – appear in its place. Haptic feedback which allows the user to feel a slight vibration when the user is using the phones controls. These keys don’t actually move when you press them, but you’d never know it. Motorola uses “localized haptics,” which creates vibrations that make you feel as if each individual key is reacting to your touch. It works really well, though the phone does make an odd buzzing noise every time you press a key.

The mode shift function allows the user to change the style of their keypad depending on the built in feature being used, for instance if the user is using the music feature the music controls will be highlighted and displays where the keypad is positioned, if the user is using the camera feature the camera controls will be displayed in the keypad area and if the user is making a call or input text the numeric and letter option keypad will be displayed. As you move between different phone functions, the keypad’s bright backlighting will change to illuminate only the relevant controls. This user friendly control system allows the user to see and use only the controls that are relevant at the time and allows the user to enjoy the feature they are using with ease.

Screen

The ROKR E8 comes with a TFT QVGA screen which measures two inches in size when measured diagonally which holds a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and displays up to 262k colours on a high resolution display. Fast scroll navigation wheel
